This little pup is seeking a new family after its owners died due to coronavirus, a US animal shelter has revealed.
Che-Che was brought to the Monmouth County SPCA in New Jersey over the Easter weekend after two of her family members “passed away due to the virus,” the organisation said.
She was “scared and shaking” when she arrived at the centre, they explained in a Facebook post on Monday, adding: “We can't imagine what it's like for a dog like her to suddenly lose everything she's ever known and then end up in an unfamiliar place.”
“Our staff knew Che-Che needed some comfort and even through our PPE (personal protective equipment), we could tell a loving touch was all it took to help her to feel safe."
In an update four days later, they said: “Che-Che has done a beautiful job of settling in with us - she's received nothing but love and affection (and a warm, soapy bath) and has been feeling MUCH better compared to when she first arrived.
“We know this little girl will make a family very happy and it's our goal to find her a home that will honor her family members who have passed from COVID-19.”
The non-profit has called for donations to ensure hundreds of other animals can be given a “soft bed, with a nutritious meal and a hopeful future.”
They added: “Unfortunately, Che-Che is the first of many animals that we anticipate needing a safe haven in these uncertain times.
“We're asking for your support NOW so that we can ensure every animal has a loving place to call home while they're temporarily without one.
“We've all seen how Covid-19 is affecting businesses, events, families and now we're faced with the reality of it taking a toll on our community's pets.”
