Tiny Merseyside beach where you can escape everything

Being on the coast we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful and unique beaches.

From the wildness of the Formby Dunes, to the haunting Iron Men on Crosby beach and the vast stretch of sand at Southport where the sea always seems to be miles away - there’s something interesting about each and every mile of our coastline. But there’s one Merseyside beach that has tendency to capture the heart of everyone who visits.

Thurstaston beach, in Wirral, is small in size but full of charm. Overlooking the Dee Estuary, it sits at the bottoms of clay cliffs, the other side of which you can find the 12 mile long Wirral Way cycle path. Visitors can reach the beach via some wooden steps which lead down to the shore, which is a mixture of sand and shingles.

The views are beautiful, stretching out across the estuary and towards the Welsh hills. Popular with dog walkers and locals but rarely crowded, the beach is a peaceful retreat all year round and particularly beautiful when the low winter sunshine casts shadows across the sand.

Lanes Lens July 29 The Wirral coastline looks lovely, as shown here by Flickr member Paulas photography. Colin says like a long and winding road with the tide out at Thurstaston Beach. If you fancy more of a walk, you can also explore the nearby Wirral Country Park, which is full of lush green areas and wildlife making this a unique ‘coast and countryside’ location. To get to Thurstaston beach head to Station Road in Thurstaston and you will find free car parking next to the Wirral Way and the Visitor Centre.
