Tiny koala joey caught on camera for the first time at Edinburgh Zoo

The UK's only koala joey has been caught on camera for the first time at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Zoological Society of Scotland released the picture which shows the adorable six-month old joey peeking out from its mother's pouch.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity captured a glimpse of the very tiny joey who was born in June to first time mum Kalari and dad Tanami.

They stated that it will be a while before visitors are able to spot the youngster.

It will take them a few months to grow big enough to move from the pouch onto Kalari’s back.

Once they reach a year-old they will then become independent.

Home to the UK's only Queensland koalas, the zoo say the joey will be weighed, sexed and named in the coming months.

native to eastern Australia, the koalas are currently classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

The conservation charity stated that the main threats facing their populations are habitat loss, wildfires and climate change.
