Tiny Edinburgh street cluttered with sign posts as locals demand return of pavement

A small Edinburgh street has been taken over by signposts with pictures showing eight metal poles dominating Murieston Lane in Gorgie.

Edinburgh Council insisted five of the signs highlighted in the small lane are required by regulation, but locals called on officials to increase pavement space.

Local man Paul posted the Google Street View pictures showing eight street signs on Murieston Lane, which runs between Gorgie Road and Murieston Road.

Eight signs are all located near each other within a two metre stretch, with little room left for people walking on the side of the road.

But road sign regulations limit the control local authorities like Edinburgh Council have over the positioning of signage and whether multiple signs can be displayed on one pole.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “While the majority of the signs pictured need to remain in place to adhere to national regulations, we do continue to assess signage across the city, making changes to reduce street clutter where possible and where budgets allow.

“This is in addition to an ongoing programme of work to reduce street clutter as part of Spaces for People and in partnership with Living Streets, as well as a review of communal bins, which seeks to site fewer bins on the pavement.”

Edinburgh Live understand the signs located at position 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 are all required under national regulations.

Poking fun at the picture, one local said: "Ah, I think you have stumbled upon Edinburgh Councils secret signage test ground, they trial them here with extensive testing regimes before inflicting on the rest of town."
