Tiny chicks feared dead as incubator shuts off in Wirral blackout

There were concerns 50 tiny chicks could have died when their incubator shut off during the Wirral blackout last night.

The baby chickens had been in the process of hatching when an unplanned power cut across West Kirby, Heswall, Irby, Bromborough and Thornton Hough stopped their only heat source.

Caitlin Walker, who lives in West Kirby, said she found the newborn birds huddling together for warmth at 4am today (Thursday, June 10).

She said: "I had 50 chicken eggs in my incubator that started hatching yesterday evening.

"I was woken this morning at 4am by a fox disturbing my chickens in the garden and I thought I'd pop into the garage and see how many more chicks had hatched.

"I found them all huddling together for warmth and heard their little feeble cheeps.

"After they have hatched it is so important to keep them warm.

"At first I thought it was a fault with the incubator but then I saw all the lights were out.

"I was running around like a headless chicken myself and my only thought was to put the incubator in the car and drove to find somewhere with a plug before they all died."

Caitlin, 51, keeps chickens in her own back garden and had been hatching some more for herself and her friends.

In her dash to find a safe place for the chicks, she passed some engineers who told her Hoylake was unaffected by the power cut and she managed to make it to a friend's house to plug the incubator in.

But she was still afraid they wouldn't make it through the cold night having already been exposed to the drop in temperatures since the outage started at midnight.

Caitlin said: "I have checked on them during a break from work and luckily they are fine and a few more have hatched now too."

ScottishPower has said a fault with underground cables was to blame for the blackout in parts of Wirral overnight.

People told the ECHO it had "creeped" them out when people had come into the streets to find no lights of any kind and a symphony of home and car alarms.

One even said their neighbours looked like "zombies" as they looked around the streets in their pyjamas.

Power was fully restored to homes at 6am.

A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said: "Due to separate underground cable faults, pockets of customers across a widespread area of the Wirral experienced a power cut from around 8pm last night.

"Our engineers worked through the night to repair the faults and restore supplies, with power gradually restored to customers from around 6am this morning.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience and disruption caused and thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding while we worked to restore supplies."
