Tiny baby weighing just 1lb 11oz fights off Covid, E.coli and sepsis

A baby boy who contracted deadly sepsis, E.coli and even Covid has fought them all off in the first eight weeks of his life.

Little Archie Edwards was born to Sheree Murray and Robert Edwards, both 21, more than three months early.

The tiny tot weighed just 1lb 11oz at birth, the Mirror reports.

The little boy was taken to the intensive care unit at Burnley General Hospital, Lancashire, when he stopped breathing.

Archie was put on a ventilator, where his parents were told that it was in his best interests that they don't touch him.

But despite all of the challenges faced by the family, 'miracle' baby Archie is still fighting.

Mum Sheree, from Colne, is thanking the NHS staff who have saved her baby boy.

"I finally got to hold his hand four days after he was born," Sheree recalls.

"It felt absolutely magical, holding his hand - it was scary but magical at the same time.

“I think the care has been absolutely amazing.

“Even when they got told he might not make it, they fought harder for him.

“There have been times when I’ve thought to myself he isn’t going to pull through, so he has shocked me quite a few times."

At just five weeks old, Archie caught a bacterial infection that led to sepsis. He then tested positive for Covid-19.

"I think that was the scariest part," said Sheree.

"It was scary when he was born but then when they said he had Covid-19, I just wanted a black hole to swallow me up."

Neither Sheree nor dad Robert tested positive for the virus, but they still couldn't see Archie, who had been put into isolation for ten days.

Even then, because of restrictions the pair have to take turns to visit him.

Little Archie fought off the virus and battled his way back to health. That meant Sheree could hold her newborn for the first time in weeks.

“I cried, a lot!” Sheree said.

Archie has now gained weight - he's just over 3lb. His family hope he will be leaving intensive care before long.

Sheree, a former mental health student, shared some great advice for parents of premature babies.

"No matter what you get told, just have hope," she said. "They are stronger than they look.

“I’m just looking forward to getting him home."
