Tiny baby dead as parents charged with murder

A couple have appeared in court charged with murdering their baby son.

Gabriela Ion, 35, and Mihai-Catalin Gulie, 28, were arrested following the death of Robert Ion, aged six months.

Cheshire police were informed at 1.05pm last Thursday that the boy had become unresponsive at home on Mersey Road in Widnes and taken to hospital.

Robert died in hospital.

His parents appeared in the dock at North Cheshire Magistrates’ Court in Warrington today.

They were assisted by an interpreter and spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and address.

The pair were remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, March 1.

Angela Blackmore appeared for the prosecution, Peter Green for Gabriela Ion, and David Robb for Gulie.

Jeffrey Dodd and Richard Coleman were the presiding magistrates.

The magistrates' court heard the custody time limit for Ion and Gulie is October 21.

In a statement issued this morning, a Cheshire police spokeswoman said: "A man and woman have been charged with murder following the death of a baby.

"At 1.05pm on Thursday, February 18, police were notified that a six month old boy had been taken to hospital after becoming unresponsive at an address in Widnes.

"The boy was taken to hospital where he passed away.

"Gabriela Ion, 35, and Mihai-Catalin Gulie, 28, were arrested and subsequently charged with murder."
