Tinder to add a panic button so users can alert police if they feel threatened on a date

It’s one of the most popular dating apps around, and now Tinder has revealed plans to add a panic button to its app.

The button would offer users an easy way to alert police if they feel threatened while on a date, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Tinder’s partner company, Match Group, is working on the feature with an app called Noonlight, which tracks the location of users and notifies authorities if there are any safety concerns.

According to the report, the feature will roll out in the US at the end of January, although it remains unclear when or if it will launch in the UK.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Many Ginsberg, CEO at Match Group, explained: “You should run a dating business as if you are a mom.

"I think a lot about safety, especially on our platforms, and what we can do to curtail bad behavior.

“There are a lot of things we tell users to do. But if we can provide tools on top of that, we should do that as well.”

Ahead of dates, users will be able to log information such as the time and location of their date.

If they then feel threatened during the date, they can trigger an alert, which will lead to Tinder sharing this information with authorities.

This isn’t the first time that an app has launched a panic button for its users - last year, Uber launched an energy button for its drivers and riders.

When a rider or driver uses the button, the car’s make and model, license plate and GPS location are shared with authorities.
