Tinder set to add panic button that will alert the police if a user feels threatened

Dating app Tinder is adding a new feature to make users feel safer.

It will soon be adding an alert button, which will notify the police when people feel unsafe.

The developers are currently working on creating the new feature, which will roll out in US first at the end of January, according to media reports.

Tinder’s partner company, Match Group, is working on the change, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Its makers are partnering with another app called Noonlight - which tracks the location of users and notifies authorities if there are any safety concerns - to release the new add-on, Birmingham Live reports.

Information on a user's Tinder profile includes a picture, age and a short biography, with the option to add a link to Instagram, Facebook or Spotify accounts.

Tinder originally required access to a user's Facebook account but, from August, allowed users to register using a telephone number and without access to a Facebook account.

Tinder has been downloaded more than 1 billion times.

Tinder had 5.2 million paying subscribers at the end of 2019's second quarter, up 1.5 million from the year-ago quarter and up 503,000 from the first quarter of 2019.

The app is currently used in about 196 countries.
