Tinder encourages users to register to vote in general election via new feature

Tinder has launched a new swiping feature to encourage users to register to vote in the upcoming general election.

Ahead of the registration deadline later today, the dating app is presenting users with a “swipe card” that will appear in between profiles.

The card will give users the opportunity to swipe left or right, like they would for a user. If they choose the latter, they will be taken directly to the UK election registration page.

The move comes after it was reported that more than 300,000 people had registered to vote in the general election on Friday, marking the fourth-largest surge in UK political history.

Numerous celebrities and public figures have been encouraging their fans and followers to register on social media, including actors Hugh Grant and Rob Delaney.

On Monday, British grime artist Stormzy tweeted in support of Labour, writing that he believed Boris Johnson to be a “sinister man” with a “long record of lying and policies that have absolutely no regard for the people that our government should be committed to helping and empowering”.

According to a performance breakdown on the GOV.UK website, the 26-year-old’s message may have resonated, with 366,000 people recorded as registering to vote on Monday, compared to 109,000 the day before.

The tweet itself received more than 39,600 likes and 19,600 retweets.
