Timothy Castagne reveals why his Celtic move broke down at the last minute

January transfer target Timothy Castagne has revealed just how close he was to joining Celtic.

He claims Atalanta turned down an £8million bid from the Scottish champions in January, with the right-back struggling to force his way into the team.

The Italians were looking for up to £12m and Castagne has since become a key player for the Serie A side and the player is now attracting interest from English clubs and AC Milan.

But he's admitted he could have been in Glasgow, with the Belgium star a top target of Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic, of course, ended up with Jeremy Toljan on loan from Borussia Dortmund instead.

Castagne said: "It's incredible how quickly things in football can change.

"In December I wasn't starting any games and there was a £8million move to Celtic on the table. It looked like I was leaving, but the club wanted £12m and the deal collapsed.

"Since then, having not played for 13 games, I played just about every other game and we qualified for the Champion League.

"So it's been an unbelievable turnaround for me and I now have the two Euro 2020 games coming up against Kazakhstan and Scotland.

"I can't wait to play with Vincent Kompany again. I made my debut against Scotland so it will be nice to play them again.

"He's a leader and was great to me ahead of that game because he gave me tactical advice and was brilliant for me."
