Timo Werner will unlock one of Frank Lampard’s biggest threats at Chelsea next season

Chelsea are set to make Timo Werner one of their big signings this summer.

The 24-year-old has been one of the most potent forwards in the Bundesliga over the past few seasons, and this campaign has been no different.

So far the Germany international has netted 25 league goals and added another eight assists over the 2019/20 campaign.

Frank Lampard has often bemoaned a lack of cutting edge from his Blues side over the course of his first season in charge of the club.

Werner would certainly change that, while Hakim Ziyech’s impressive assist record would be the Blues another huge threat in the final third.

One of the forward’s biggest assets, however, is his pace and that could well unlock one of Lampard’s main threats next season.

It’s clear that Lampard wants to control games and have the majority of possession, something they have managed to do on several occasions this season.

But where they have struggled is breaking down stubborn teams, and Werner’s extra pace would unlock a big threat for the Blues.

Lampard is certainly moulding a front line which could push the Blues further towards the top of the Premier League table next season.

Willian and Pedro are both expected to leave at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi both provide a lot of attacking threat, and Ziyech has the technical ability to unlock defences.

On the counter, Werner can make Lampard’s team one of the biggest threats in the league, and he can be the key to unlocking that aspect to their game.

Chelsea fans got a few of some counter attacking magic in the win at Arsenal, when Willian broke through and played in Tammy Abraham to finish.

The move for Werner would allow that aspect to Chelsea’s game and would cause defences a lot of problems next season.
