Timo Werner transfer could 'spell the end' for Tammy Abraham at Chelsea

Timo Werner's arrival could spell the end for Tammy Abraham at Chelsea.

Abraham has worked tirelessly for his opportunity at Stamford Bridge, gaining first-team experience on several loan spells before finally making his breakthrough this season.

Frank Lampard was the first manager to give the 22-year-old a real chance in the side, and his faith has been repaid by Abraham, who has scored 15 times in 34 appearances this season.

It's no secret Chelsea have been in the market for another striker, but it was felt any incoming signings would provide back-up or share responsibilities with Abraham.

However Steve Nicol believes the arrival of Werner may signal the end of Abraham's run in the side.

"I don’t believe Frank and Chelsea are going to change the way they play,’ the ex-Liverpool defender said on ESPN.

"And you have to say that signing Werner would spell the end for Tammy Abraham. I mean goodness knows what is going through his head.

"Allegedly Frank has been telling Werner that he is going to build the team around him so you don’t build your team around a wide midfielder.

"You build through the spine so that means straight away that Tammy Abraham is in trouble."

Werner will arrive from Red Bull Leipzig with a proven track record as a no.9.

This season alone he has scored more than double Abraham's tally, with 31 in all competitions.

Regardless of the competition for places though, it seems Abraham is pleased Werner has picked to join him at Chelsea.

Abraham liked a post on Instagram on Thursday, seemingly giving his approval for the deal.

And while the 24-year-old's arrival is certain to hamped Abraham's playing time, Nicol says it was a necessary for Chelsea to strengthen in that department.

He added: "It’s a good move from Frank though because he is trying to take Chelsea from challenging for the top four to competing at the top for the title."
