Timo Werner transfer clause update as Jamie Carragher reveals Wayne Rooney’s Liverpool boost

Werner set to join Liverpool if release clause met

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner will join Liverpool if the Premier League leaders meet his £52m release clause, Sky Sports have reported.

But the clause expires on June 15 and the Reds are not expected to make a move for the Germany international before then.

Werner was repeatedly linked with Liverpool throughout the January transfer window, and in February said he was 'very proud' of reported interest from the European champions.

And the 24-year-old, who has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, also described Jurgen Klopp as 'the best coach in the world'.

Liverpool are likely to face competition from Bayern Munich in their pursuit of Werner, who has been with Leipzig since 2016.

Carragher recalls Rooney admission

Jamie Carragher has revealed he was once told by Wayne Rooney that Manchester United’s players celebrated a Liverpool win in the Champions League.

The rivalry between the two clubs was seemingly cast aside as the Reds beat Chelsea on penalties in the semi-final of the competition.

United had already been knocked out by Milan in the other semi-final, and Rooney and his team-mates watched the Liverpool game together.

And it was clear which team they were backing.

“Wayne Rooney told me a story, I think it was 2007, we played you [Chelsea] and I think they were playing AC Milan,” Carragher, who was joined by John Terry, said on Sky Sports’ Off Script show.

“And Milan ended up beating them but we must have played the night before.

“And Wayne Rooney told me when we won on penalties all the Man United [players] watching it together in the hotel erupted and cheered.

"You think Liverpool-Man United, the rivalry, so I think it shows how respected you [Chelsea] were as a team, and feared, but also how much Jose and Chelsea at that time got under so many people’s skin.”

Liverpool fan makes valid point about title claims

A Liverpool fan has offered a clever retort to those claiming the Reds should not be awarded the Premier League title if the season cannot be finished.

UEFA once again reiterated their strong recommendation to complete top tier domestic competitions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday afternoon.

But if the current campaign is unable to reach a conclusion, it is not clear whether or not clubs will be awarded trophies.

“You have to laugh at rival fans saying Liverpool shouldn't be awarded the title as they haven’t won it mathematically,” Liverpool supporter Tim Bolton wrote on Twitter.

“In that case we should be the only English team in the Champions League next season as we're the only team mathematically who’ve qualified.”
