Timo Werner transfer addressed as RB Leipzig chief comments on Liverpool

Liverpool have not contacted RB Leipzig regarding striker Timo Werner, according to the club's chief executive.

The Reds continue to be linked with the Germany international, who is believed to have a £52m release clause in his contract after extending his deal last summer.

But despite the 24-year-old openly talking about rumoured interest from Liverpool in the past, Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff insists he has not held talks with the Reds or Bayern Munich.

And he wants star man Werner to stay put.

"Neither Jurgen Klopp nor Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has contacted me," Mintzlaff said in an interview with General-Anzeiger Bonn.

"First and foremost, we are happy that we managed to extend his contract until 2023.

"We continue to believe that we remain a very good place for Timo Werner to develop as a German international."

Back in February, Werner was asked about the possibility of a move to Liverpool and spoke glowingly about Klopp's side.

He told Viasport: "Yes I know that Liverpool is the best team in this moment in the world.

"And when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.

"But in case of that, yeah, it's a pleasure but I know that in Liverpool there are a lot of good players.

"And I have to improve myself, then to learn much more things to get on this level to play there."
