Timo Werner stops following RB Leipzig on Twitter after club aims dig at Liverpool

Timo Werner has stopped following RB Leipzig on Twitter after his club aimed a dig at Liverpool.

Germany international Werner has been strongly linked with a move to the Reds for some time now, and even admitted he was "proud" to be on their radar last month.

Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann responding with a warning, telling the striker he wouldn't be revered in the Premier League in quite the same way he is in Germany.

And the Bundelisga club have now seemingly waded into the speculation by aiming a dig at the Reds - prompting Werner to quickly stop following his own club on the social media channel.

Following Liverpool's first Premier League defeat of the season against Watford, the Reds' official Twitter account posted a graphic to report the 3-0 scoreline.

RB Leipzig's official Twitter account replied to the tweet with a GIF of Werner looking at his phone and pulling a shocked face - as if in response to seeing the surprise scoreline.

The 'LFC Fans Corner' Twitter account then replied to Leipzig's tweet, saying: "This is the weirdest transfer announcement I've seen, but I'll take it", to which the Bundelisga club responded with yet another GIF showing Werner slapping his forehead.

Werner hasn't spoken out on the Twitter incident.

The German striker isn't particularly active on social media, but he has since decided to stop following the four accounts he was keeping track of - including Leipzig's.

Werner dropped a huge hint he would be keen on joining Liverpool last month.

Following Leipzig's win over Tottenham in the Champions League, the 23-year-old told ViasportFotball: "Yes I know that Liverpool is the best team in the world at the moment.

"When you're linked with that team it makes you very proud but in case of that, it's a pleasure, but I know Liverpool have a lot of good players.

"I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level and to play there."
