Timo Werner 'still key' to Chelsea despite Romelu Lukaku 'highlighting his shortcomings'

Here is your Chelsea evening digest on Thursday, September 16.

Werner 'still key'

Although Romelu Lukaku's return to Stamford Bridge has edged Timo Werner out of Thomas Tuchel's starting XI, statistics show the German international is still a key part of Chelsea's squad.

Following Tuchel's arrival, Mason Mount and Werner have emerged as Chelsea's most dangerous combining players.

The pair have struck an astute relationship on the field tallying the club's highest expected threat combination of 1.15 xT followed by Marcos Alonso and Werner (0.82), and Cesar Azpilicueta and Werner (0.78).

football.london has delved into the numbers to give a full analysis of Werner's impact on the team – showing just how important he is.

Lukaku's arrival 'exposes' Werner

That said, there can be little doubt of the impact Romelu Lukaku has had on this Chelsea team following his arrival from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window.

Four goals in four games, from six shots on target show just how prolific the Belgian international has been – and show he is set to succeed where Werner failed for Chelsea up front last season.

The former RB Leipzig striker, who joined Chelsea last summer for £47 million, struggled to find the net for the Blues despite scoring 28 goals across 34 Bundesliga clashes the season prior.

And despite Chelsea struggling to break through during their 1-0 Champions League win against Zenit on Wednesday night, and even with two extra subs at Tuchel’s disposal, Werner remained unused during the tie.

football.london's Daniel Childs has now said Lukaku is 'brutally exposing' Timo Werner's game.

Time for Antonio Rudiger to go?

Antonio Rudiger's contract finishes at the end of this season and rumoured wage issues are causing a delay in ongoing talks over a new deal.

It has led to the German international being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge and he could leave as early as January.

Carefree Chelsea writer and presenters Scott Clayton, Jai Mcintosh and Daniel Childs discussed Antonio Rudiger's future at the club – and whether the club should cash in on him.
