Timo Werner starts for RB Leipzig as Chelsea close to completing £53m transfer

Timo Werner has been named in the RB Leipzig starting XI to face Paderborn this afternoon.

Chelsea are seeking to finalise their £53million signing of the 24-year-old goalscorer in the coming days, with his release clause set to expire on June 15.

Against the team bottom of the Bundesliga, Werner will be expected to close the gap on Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski in the race of Germany's top goalscorer.

The Germany international currently tails 29-25 with Bayern also in action against Champions League hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen, who will not have Kai Havertz leading their attack because of a muscle injury.

Julian Nagelsmann's team must win to maintain their grip on a top-four finish with one of Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach set to miss out on the Champions League qualification places.

Meanwhile, Ethan Ampadu is not in the Leipzig squad for today's game.

The Wales international has been troubled by back issues, understood to be the result of growing pains, since February but made his return to training this past week.

He has rarely featured when fit under Nagelsmann but is hopeful of getting some minutes before the German campaign in concluded and his loan deal expires.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga today, Bayern will take a big step towards retaining the title if they win at Leverkusen while Jadon Sancho, the other player to have captured Chelsea fans' attention over the past few weeks, is in action later this evening when Dortmund host in-form Hertha Berlin at Signal Iduna Park at 5:30pm.

Kick-off in Leipzig is 15:30 local time, 14:30 in London and you can join us for a live watchalong right here with senior reporter Alan Smith fielding readers' questions.
