Timo Werner "should change clubs" says RB Leipzig chief as Liverpool linked with a move

Timo Werner looks increasingly likely to quit the Bundesliga this summer - but despite constant links Liverpool have not made contact with Red Bull Leipzig.

RB Leipzig chief Ralf Rangnick effectively confirmed the forward's exit this summer in an interview with Doppelpass on German television station Sport1.

"Our position is that if he does not renew the contract, he should change clubs," he said.

"He would first have to agree with a club and this club would have to contact RB, which has not happened to my knowledge."

Only five days ago Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff suggested Liverpool would be in any race to sign Werner as the striker may want to ‘play under Jürgen Klopp ’.

Mintzlaff told Sky Sports: "Last year we certainly didn’t play football like we did in the season before. We have submitted an offer and we know that Timo would rather not extend – but that can still change.

"Maybe he doesn’t want to go to Bayern Munich. Maybe he wants to go to Thomas Tuchel in Paris or, I have no idea, maybe to Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool or Lucien Favre at Borussia Dortmund."

Bayern Munich are believed to view Werner as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The 23-year-old scored 16 times in 30 Bundesliga games for Leipzig this term and produced 10 assists in another eye-catching campaign.

With Daniel Sturridge set to leave Anfield this summer, it has been claimed by transfer guru Ian McGarry that Liverpool have intensified their efforts to sign the striker in recent times. He told The Transfer Window podcast: “We mentioned a few weeks ago on the podcast that they have an interest in Timo Werner at RB Leipzig.

“And that interest has increased I’m led to believe in the last two weeks.”
