Timo Werner sends Liverpool fans into frenzy with 'familiar' goal

It’s safe to say that Liverpool fans are beginning to know the qualities of Timo Werner.

The Red Bull Leipzig striker has been frequently linked with a move to Anfield ahead of the transfer window, and is thought to have a £52m release clause in his contract.

It was suggested last week that Liverpool had withdrawn from talks to sign Werner, refusing point blank to part with such a fee for his services amid the current financial uncertainty following the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Echo understands the Reds have not held talks with the Bundesliga club, and it remains to be seen where the 30-goal striker will end up when the transfer window opens.

Werner was in action on Monday night for Leipzig, as they face FC Koln in their Bundesliga away trip.

The German scored a brilliant goal, which stemmed from former Reds goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi’s kick following a corner.

With Werner in his own half and onside, Gulácsi punted the ball forward to launch a counter-attack, and the German sprinted though on goal to score Leipzig’s fourth goal.

It was certainly a goal to behold, and several Liverpool fans could not help but reminisce about a similar strike they had seen at Anfield.

Reds supporters immediately caught the resemblance between Werner’s goal and Mohamed Salah’s strike in the 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League in January.

Salah, like Werner, was inside his own half when Alisson booted the ball upfield in the closing moments of the contest, and the Egyptian calmly placed the ball through the legs of David De Gea to secure a precious three points.

The similarities between the goals from Salah and Werner were striking, and Liverpool fans could not help but get excited over the goal from the Leipzig frontman.
