Timo Werner's big miss and the next steps to complete Chelsea's £53m move for Leipzig star

The more you watch Timo Werner in action for RB Leipzig, the more you realise that for all his supreme talents he is often reliant upon instinct. When the 24-year-old is given time to think about what to do next, strange things seem to happen.

Take the moment in the 43rd minute of last night's 2-0 win away to Hoffenheim that strengthened his current team's grip on a top-four finish in the Bundesliga.

With the hosts' defence pushing high, Werner found himself on the edge of the penalty area with only goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to beat.

Deloitte predicts Premier League clubs will lose £1bn revenue this season

It was a finish that looked and should have been easier than almost all the 25 Bundesliga goals he had scored up to that point.

But he took a streadying touch as he raced forward, then had a look up and somehow sent the shot straight over the bar.

It did not alter the final outcome but his face and the expression of Nagelsmann in the dugout when a camera cut to summed up how bad it really was.

As one Twitter user pointed out, since it became clear that Werner was Chelsea bound in a £53million deal a little over a week ago he has had seven attempts on goal, two of them considered big chances, with an xG of 1.36 and failed to convert any.

The reaction from social media was unsurprisingly hysteric with comparisons to Alvaro Morata and suggestions that he will be a Premier League flop but there was still much to like about his performance.

Perhaps the miss was in the back of his head during the second period when he twice unselfishly found team-mates when in good shooting positions, the first of which ended with on-loan Manchester City full back Angelino finding the net only for the assistant referee to raise his flag for offside.

As for the transfer, while the delay has caused anxiety among some desperate for an announcement there are two hurdles to overcome but a relaxed view from all sides.

As first reported by The Athletic, the first surrounds organising a medical as logistical issues caused by coronavirus are making it difficult for Chelsea's staff to travel to Germany while Werner cannot come to London while Leipzig's season has three games to play.

Beyond that there are a couple of details out standing relating to his contract and, according to The Telegraph, the structure in which the £53million fee will be paid.

Both are expected to be overcome in due time and all concerned are adamant that Werner will be a Chelsea player.
