Timo Werner rubs salt in the wound with statement on ex-Chelsea youngster

Timo Werner has tipped former Chelsea youngster Jamal Musiala to have a "huge future" having watched him on international duty.

The pair are in the same Germany squad with the teenager impressing in Bayern Munich's first-team.

Musiala was on Chelsea's books for eight years from 2011 and the Blues were desperate to retain him before he left for Munich.

Gareth Southgate was also keen to have him play for England, before he picked the country of his birth.

Musiala was on hand to provide an assist for Werner as Germany saw off Leichtenstein 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

Had things been different the compatriots could've been teaming up at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have seen several young talents slip through their fingers in recent years and Werner's comments suggest Musiala too is on that list.

"Jamal's gone through the roof in the last six months; he’s a great player and has a huge future," he said.

"Jamal just goes out on the pitch, plays his game and has fun. We're happy to have him with us. Maybe we, other players, should take a leaf out of his book."

Chelsea offered Musiala a new deal before he headed to Germany, reports football.london.

The 17-year-old though felt as if a move to the Allianz Arena would be better for his development.

Musiala represented England at U21 level but now looks set to be a key fixture for Germany going forward.

Already he is Bayern's youngest ever goalscorer and new boss Julian Nagelsmann has no reservations about putting his faith in the teenager.

"He has unbelievable potential," he said. "It's extraordinary. He has great finishing qualities. Unbelievable attacking qualities also in his dribbling with the ball.

"He justified my trust [in him]. He's doing very well. He has the basis for an outstanding career."

"The nice thing is that he is very humble and doesn't celebrate when he plays well.

"He has this football pitch mentality. He has to maintain that, this carefree nature. That's unbelievably good. My biggest task is not to drive it out of him."

Musiala made 37 appearances for Bayern last term, scoring on seven occasions, including in their Champions League knockout win over Lazio.

Under a new manager he has started the current campaign with a bang, scoring three times in five games.
