Timo Werner release clause expires TODAY as Chelsea finalise £53m transfer

Chelsea are dotting the i's and crossing the t's on their deal to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for £53million.

Standard Sport understands the transfer will be officially completed this week after smoothing over a number of minor issues thrown up by the coronavirus pandemic.

The German striker’s £53million release clause expires today.

The move has laboured since news first broke that the Blues were closing in on Werner earlier in June, with Covid-19 restrictions complicating the medical process.

But it is now only a matter of time before Werner, who has scored 25 Bundesliga goals in 30 starts this term, is unveiled as a Chelsea player despite interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool.

The Germany international will sign a five-year-deal worth £200,000-a-week, becoming the second summer addition at Chelsea after a deal for Ajax's Hakim Ziyech was tied up in February.

The Blues are also growing in confidence that they will strike a deal for Leicester's Ben Chilwell with the Foxes now resigned to selling their left-back.
