Timo Werner has intimated he wouldn't have been a good fit at Liverpool as he explained moving to Chelsea rather than "one of the best in the world".
Werner became one of the most in-demand talents in European football when it emerged he wanted to leave RB Leipzig in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of the Germany international but Liverpool regarded the striker's £47.6million release clause as too expensive given the financial uncertainty prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Rather than wait for the situation to settle, Werner instead accepted an offer to join Chelsea that saw him leave Leipzig before their Champions League campaign resumed in August.
And Werner has now hinted he may not have been well suited for Liverpool, where he would have been looking to dislodge one of the established from line of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
"When I decided to leave Leipzig I talked to different clubs, apart from Chelsea," confirmed the 24-year-old.
"I don't want to talk too much about other clubs because in the end I decided to join Chelsea. There are other clubs who, like Chelsea, have a great team.
"Maybe I can't fit good into some other teams, but I joined Chelsea because it was the best decision I could take, not only because of the style of football but because of what they have shown me.
"Yes, it was a hard decision at the end. But I'm very excited, proud and happy to be at Chelsea.
"When I see it now after one-and-a-half months, it feels right. We can do very well with this team in the next few weeks and the next few years."
Werner will come against his former suitors on Sunday when Liverpool make the trip to Stamford Bridge.
The teams last met in July with the Reds winning an eight-goal thriller 5-3 on the evening they lifted their first championship in 30 years.
And Werner acknowledges Klopp's men are the team to beat while admitting Virgil van Dijk isn't the only defender with whom he is expecting a major tussle.
"I'm looking forward to the game," he said. "There are a lot of good teams but Liverpool are one of the best in the world.
"They won the league last year, they have the same team as last year and will be as strong as last year.
"It will be a really good challenge for us to test how far we have come. We haven't had a good pre-season because a lot of players were on holidays and others can't train because of travelling (quarantine).
"It went well in the last game (a 3-1 win at Brighton) and we will improve."
Werner added: "Liverpool have great players. It's not just Virgil van Dijk - all the defenders are very good. They conceded the least goals in the league last season.
"It's a great team. In every position they have great players. But we also have great players and the quality to beat them.
"It will be an interesting game because they've had a normal pre-season and we have not. It'll be better for them. But everybody is fit for us."
