Timo Werner has brought something to Chelsea 'nobody else' could have in hidden role

Former Chelsea star Mario Melchiot believes Timo Werner has brought something very unique to Chelsea, and it's not exactly what the Blues will have envisaged when they signed him last summer.

Werner has received plenty of criticism since his £47.6milliom move from RB Leipzig in the summer, despite scoring 11 and assisting 12 goals since his arrival.

The German has improved significantly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in late January, but he is still missing chances, leading to criticism continuing from earlier in the campaign.

Nevertheless, former Chelsea defender Melchiot has pointed out something that Werner has brought to Chelsea that 'nobody else' could have brought.

Speaking to talkSPORT after Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg, Melchiot said: "Werner brought something to the team that nobody else can bring.

"If you look at the way Chelsea were playing, look at how one man can keep a back line busy. That was Werner and his pace. They were always worried about him when they were pressing."

He added: "Look how many times Kante become free in the middle of the park because they were so worried about Werner that they couldn’t press all the way through.”

Werner was known as a goalscorer for previous club RB Leipzig, but his role has evolved a little at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old scored 36 goals last season, but he will be lucky to get even half of that figure this season, his first campaign at Chelsea.

Though, he has spent much of his time out wide in a front three, and as Melchiot highlighted, it's not all about goals, with Werner's energy and threat causing opposing teams plenty of problems so far this season.
