Timo Werner handed one simple instruction in order to improve his stuttering Chelsea form

Chelsea striker Timo Werner has been told by Germany assistant manager Danny Rohl that he needs to work on his self-confidence if he is to find the net on a regular basis.

Since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020, the forward has failed to hit the lofty heights expected of him.

The 25-year-old has scored just 14 goals for the Blues in 60 appearances in all competitions - just seven of those coming in the Premier League.

He did however manage to get on the scoresheet in his most recent outing as Thomas Tuchel’s men overcame Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Amid a warning that he could potentially be sold should he not improve his goalscoring form, Rohl, who was previously on the backroom staff at both Southampton and Bayern Munich, has suggested that Werner just needs to believe in his own abilities.

Talking in an interview with The Athletic, he said: “We have other forwards, like Timo Werner, who can also be a good striker.

“He needs self-confidence and I hope we can build this up in the national team. We can create an atmosphere for him. The first bit of feedback from him was great.”

Werner certainly has a far better record for his country than for the Blues. In 45 caps for Die Mannschaaft, he has scored 19 times, which includes three in his last three international outings.

He has again been named in Hansi Flick’s latest squad as Germany face World Cup qualifiers against Romania and North Macedonia.

Blues boss Tuchel has admitted his relief at Werner finding the net heading into the international break - his first Premier League goal since scoring the winner against West Ham United in April.

Talking in his post-match press conference, he said: “There are a lot of things for him to improve but we are happy and relieved he scored in the late minutes of this game. It was a very important goal for us.”
