Timo Werner gives short answer on whether he regrets joining Chelsea instead of Liverpool

Timo Werner has opened up on his decision to sign for Chelsea instead of Liverpool last summer.

The Reds were frequently linked with the striker last summer while he was at RB Leipzig, where he scored 34 goals in the 2019/20 season.

Various reports suggested that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp wanted the German to operate as an alternative striker option to Roberto Firmino.

However, in the end the Reds opted not to move for Werner and instead moved on to sign Diogo Jota from Wolves on a long-term deal.

That opened the door for Chelsea who paid the £50m release clause in Werner’s contract at Leipzig.

Werner’s first season at Stamford Bridge has been rather hit and miss, with 12 goals in all competitions including just six in the Premier League.

By comparison, Jota scored 13 goals in his debut season at Anfield, with nine in the English top flight, and played 22 fewer games than the Chelsea striker.

Werner’s season did however end on a high after he helped Chelsea win the Champions League, and now he’s reflected on his decision to move to Chelsea over Liverpool.

Werner told Bild, via football.london : "I have often asked myself: was it right, was it wrong?

"Now I can say that it was the right step and the best decision."
