Timo Werner explains how he is looking to emulate Didier Drogba at Chelsea

Few parallels can be drawn so far between Timo Werner's time at Chelsea and that of club legend Didier Drogba.

While the German striker has struggled to find his feet in England, Drogba is still highly-revered around Stamford Bridge following his two successful spells spanning a total of nine years.

However, it was not always plain sailing for the striker, who struggled himself at the beginning of his Chelsea career and grew into the blue shirt as years went by.

And Werner is now hoping to use his own struggles in his debut campaign as merely a starting point for greater success to emulate his fellow frontman.

When asked if he was inspired by the likes of Drogba, Werner told BBC Sport : "A lot of good strikers come to the Premier League and take one year to settle down and adapt.

"I think my form is going up and getting better and better. Maybe this year is not the year of goal-scoring for Timo but at the end I will reflect on the season.

"I have learned a lot. I know exactly the teams we play against, how they play."

Werner admitted he found his recent barren run of 14 games without a goal "tough" and has recently expressed the "guilt" he felt at Frank Lampard's dismissal.

But slowly and surely, it appears the 24-year-old is beginning to turn a corner.

He has only netted once since the arrival of new boss Thomas Tuchel, but his performances have greatly improved.

So too has his relationship with his manager, as he claims he finds it slightly easier to understand compatriot Tuchel than he did so under Lampard.

And Werner is hoping his worst form is now behind him as he sets sights on the 164-goal tally set by Drogba.

“I never had it in my career before,” he added. “You can always learn more from the bad situations. I learned to trust in myself, to give everything on the pitch, not only think about goals and fight for the team.

“Now I hope this period is gone and I score a few more goals until the end of the season.”
