Timo Werner explains how close he came to joining Manchester United instead of Chelsea

Timo Werner has revealed several top clubs fought for his signature, but chose a move to Chelsea as the best for his career.

Manchester United were heavily linked with the German striker, as well as Liverpool and others, but Frank Lampard's men have sealed the former RB Leipzig talisman. MEN Sport understands the 24-year-old was never a priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side but that United did monitor him ahead of a possible transfer.

Werner has now spoken about his decision in an interview with German media outlet Sportbuzzer and admitted that it was a simple decision to head for Stamford Bridge.

"I agreed a few weeks ago," he said. "The whole thing was quite unproblematic because I had a lot of time to think about it before the Corona [virus] period.

"It's no secret that there were several offers.

"It could have been," he said, when asked if he might have joined United, Liverpool or Inter Milan.

"There were some top clubs that fought for me. The entire Chelsea London package was the best for me, my game and my career.

"The game is played more often in England than in Germany, so there is not much time left for training. But it's true: I still have to prove myself and go full throttle."

United are still keen on Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, having secured the short-term future of Odion Ighalo - on a loan extension from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua - until January.

It remains to be seen whether Solskjaer will go into the market for another striker, though it seems unlikely given the current market in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
