Timo Werner decision Frank Lampard must make to get the best out of Chelsea's attack

Timo Werner has had a quiet start to life in front of goal at Chelsea.

The 24-year-old is yet to get his first Premier League goal of the campaign, having only found the back of the net in the Carabao Cup loss to Spurs.

Werner was one of the top marksman in the Bundesliga last season, with 28 goals to his name, adding to the 16 he had in the campaign before.

So far in England, it hasn't quite worked out for the Germany international, despite actually looking quite bright for the Blues in their opening matches.

The pressure will be felt by Werner, who is obviously desperate to find the back of the net.

When Chelsea were awarded their first penalty in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, there was a discussion between himself and Jorginho over who should take it.

The Italy international is the number one penalty taker for the Blues, however being in a 2-0 lead in the second half could have been enough to let Werner take it.

As it happened, Jorginho took both penalties, with Tammy Abraham also not happy that he couldn't take the second spot-kick.

However, for Werner some of the frustration might also be coming over where he is being played.

In the opening game of the campaign, Werner was played down the middle and he looked very dangerous, running behind the line and winning the penalty.

Since then, however, Werner has been pushed out wide, with Kai Havertz leading the line in one game and Abraham the last two league matches.

Werner certainly has the ability to play in that role, while the injuries to Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic also meaning the Blues were two wingers down.

However, with the two players back in the squad having recovered, there is a chance for Werner to move into the role which could well suit him better.

Werner showed in Germany's 3-3 draw with Switzerland on Tuesday night how useful he can be up top, scoring an excellent solo goal and also linking up well with Havertz.

The summer signing likes to drift out wide as well, leaving space for others to move in to and also to utilise the flanks well.

If Werner was to play up top, then that would obviously mean Abraham would find himself out of the starting XI.

Abraham bagged himself a goal against West Brom, but has also struggled to take his chances over the course of the campaign so far.

Werner will be hoping to get off the mark against Southampton on Saturday, and the best way could be for him to lead the line.
