Timo Werner and Raheem Sterling highlight Liverpool transfer change under Jurgen Klopp

Probably the only way Timo Werner could have put his point across any clearer was if he had spoken while wearing a Liverpool shirt and breaking off from singing a chorus of 'Allez Allez Allez'.

Not for the RB Leipzig striker the subtle approach.

Instead, Werner addressed increased speculation over his future by issuing what even the most cursory scrutiny would determine as being a come-and-get-me plea to the European and world champions.

Jurgen Klopp is the best and I am perfect for his team, was the gist of the German's comments.

The staple response of concentrating on his current employers for now was then trotted out, but the intimation was pretty obvious.

And Werner wasn't the only player flirting with the opposition this week.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling raised eyebrows when discussing Real Madrid, who City face in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"Right now I'm at City and I'm really happy," he said. "But I say Real Madrid are a fantastic club. When you see the white shirt you know exactly what the club stands for, it's massive.

"But at the same time, I have a contract with City now and I have to respect this. But it's a fantastic club."

Of course, Sterling has form for courting other clubs, given the acrimonious way in which he departed Liverpool in the summer of 2015, eventually ending up at the Etihad.

And he hasn't been the only one.

Luis Suarez with Arsenal and then Barcelona. Philippe Coutinho, also with Barcelona. Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso had dalliances too, although far more discretely.

What they all had in common was they were among the best players at Liverpool at the time, and their potential suitors knew a little flickering of the eyelashes and the deal was two-thirds towards being done.

Liverpool were being picked off.

Now, though, the tide has changed. And the Reds, thanks to their huge progress under Klopp in recent years, have become a much sought-after destination.

Anfield is the place to be, fun, vibrant and, most importantly of all, a winning machine where players are routinely improved.

And many of the next generation want in.

With Liverpool in such a strong position, the pool of talent in which they are fishing for new signings is considerably smaller than three years earlier.

But their bait is now so sizeable, so tempting, that many of those searching a new challenge would find it difficult to resist.

Werner has made his thoughts clear - and who knows how many will follow suit by the time the transfer window reopens in the summer?
