Timir Chanda cries foul as Tripura Cricket Association members try to oust him

KOLKATA: Little seems to change in the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) as the president Manik Saha ruled unit once again turned active to remove its secretary Timir Chanda from the post.

On Monday, much to Chanda’s surprise was served a letter mentioning his ouster from the post. However, no meeting of the association took place regarding this. Chanda also feels the decision was taken in gross violation of the Tripura High Court order.

The highest court of the state on January 18 this year ordered Chanda to continue in office till the completion of a case in this regard in the lower court. That case has still not been resolved there.

The TCA Apex Council members in a surprising move had earlier removed Chanda from his post on March 13, 2021. The former Tripura all-rounder then moved the Western additional district judge court No. 2 challenging the association’s decision.

The court ruled in the former player’s favour on October 4, 2021. But the TCA officials refused to still admit Chanda back and they approached the high court seeking a stay order.

But the High Court too came in Chanda’s favour asking him to continue in office till the case is resolved.

It might be mentioned here that Saha’s position as president of the association came under the scanner when the oral surgeon was unanimously elected as the new president of the Tripura state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in January last year, just three months after taking over as the president of the association. Saha took the BJP state unit baton from the then Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

The Lodha panel categorically called to keep political influence out of the game and had barred public servants or ministers from holding office in any capacity in the BCCI or any of its units.
