Timings for Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse as the social event of the year approaches at a gallop

Excitement is building ahead of Ladies Day which will see crowds of well turned-out spectators enjoy one of Newcastle's racing events - and social highlights - of the year.

Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse is a showpiece event not just for the horses but for the race-goers themselves who always dress to impress, not least because there is a prize worth thousands up for grabs for the winner of the Best Dressed Lady competition.

With all the day's action to look forward to this weekend - which The Chronicle readers will be able to follow on July 27 in our live blog - ticket-holders will be wanting to plan the details of their outing.

Aside from our , which provides all the need-to-know information from tickets to travel and dress code, here are the essential timings for what's happening and when.

11am - gates will open. The buzz sets in with people often liking to arrive early, get their bearings, meet friends, mingle with strangers and perhaps enjoy a drink at the bar before the day gets properly under way.

1.40pm - the first of the seven flat races - there were eight last year - will get under way.

3.30pm -  Best Dressed Lady semi-final

4.05pm - Best Dressed Lady final

5.05pm - the last race of the day

6.30pm - end of the all-day entertainment which will feature an Ibiza Takeover with live DJ sets from Ministry of Sound and Pacha DJ Felix Leiter, and local DJ Moscrop.
