Timi Sobowale joins American outfit Real Monarchs from Manchester City

Timi Sobowale has joined American outfit Real Monarchs from Manchester City.

A Republic of Ireland Under-19 international, he will complete the move to the USL Championship team pending visa approval.

Sobowale had been linked with MLS side Real Salt Lake in January along with Crystal Palace, Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers and Millwall.

But the Utah-based Monarchs are owned by Real Salt Lake and are effectively their reserve team playing in the league below the MLS.

“Timi is a young cerebral defender who, for his age, carries himself with a great abundance of maturity,” said Monarchs general manager Tony Beltran.

“The expectation is for him to come in and be a stalwart defender for the Monarchs. We look forward to watching him continue to develop and mature as a defender.”

Sobowale, 19, joined Manchester City from Waterford schoolboy side Villa FC in 2018 and made 21 appearances at various levels up to and including the Under-23s.

Monarchs drew their opening league game away to San Antonio on Saturday.
