Times Square death: Woman pushes passenger in front of oncoming train

New York police arrested a woman after she allegedly shoved another woman into an oncoming train, killing her in the heart of Times Square

The 30-year-old reportedly attacked a 49-year-old Queens woman around 1.20 pm, pushing her into a Number 1 train, an NYPD spokesperson told The Independent.

NYPD said that the attack appeared to be unprovoked, according to a preliminary investigation. However, the New York Daily News reported that witnesses saw the two women arguing before one was pushed into the train.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The suspect is in custody and the investigation remains ongoing until further notice,” the spokesperson said.

Two people were struck and killed by trains in 2012 after being pushed onto the tracks. Then-mayor Michael Bloomberg decried the circumstances of the deaths, which occurred only a month apart.

“You can say it’s only two out of three or four million people who ride the subway every day, but two is two too many,” Mr Bloomberg said. “I don’t know that there is a way to prevent things. There is always going to be somebody, a deranged person.”
