More than 4600 people were unemployed in the ACT on this day in 1977.

The figure represented a drop of more than 100 people from the previous month, but 95 more adult males were unemployed.

The number of junior males who were jobless dropped by 25 people to 1052; the decrease was attributed to placements under the Special Youth Employment Training Program.

"Unemployed adult females fell from 818 in July to 688 in August, a fall or 130 which was attributed mainly to a withdrawal of married women from the market over the school holidays," a story on the front page of The Canberra Times read.

"The number of unemployed junior females dropped from 767 to 721, a fall of 46 attributed to the filling of vacancies at the Woden Plaza and to the youth program."

Employers of electricians and panel beaters had some trouble filling job vacancies.

Then-member for Canberra, John Haslem, said the drop in unemployment numbers for the first time in three months was heartening.

"He was optimistic ... that government action would be taken about public service staff ceilings in Canberra and about expanding job opportunities for school leavers and [people with disabilities]," the report read.
