Timeline: The Babri Mosque issue

Riots following the Babri Mosque demolition killed more than 1,000 people in India [Robert Nickelsberg/Liaison/Getty Images]

The demolition of the Babri Mosque in the north Indian town of Ayodhya has remained the source of friction between the country's Hindus and Muslims.

Its destruction in 1992, by Hindu nationalist mobs, triggered some of the deadliest religious riots the country had seen since independence in 1947.

The roots of the conflict date back more than 100 years.
