Time to nominate your East Kilbride sporting heroes

East Kilbride Sports Council is welcoming nominations for the Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The hunt is on to find the outstanding amateur athletes from 2019, as EK Sports Council prepare to honour performers young and old at their annual prize giving on Saturday, April 25.

Following another spectacular year for sport in the town, EK Sports Council have begun their search for the next champion – and they need your help to find who will follow in the footsteps of reigning champion Lee Alexander.

The Glasgow City goalkeeper and Scotland women’s international claimed the top prize when she beat sprinter Greg Kelly to the overall prize last time out.

Alexander excelled in domestic competitions for her club, winning a league and cup double, while helping Scotland qualify for their first-ever World Cup.

Now, EK Sports Council chairman, Jim Ballantyne, is on the lookout for the next champion.

He said: “Lee is certainly a hard act to follow, but I’m sure that there is a worthy winner out there. We hope to get plenty of nominations recognising the wonderful achievements of the talented sports people from East Kilbride.

“Over the last year there has been some fantastic performances from local athletes. There is usually plenty of nominations for the younger categories, so hopefully we will see more athletes nominated in the adult and senior team categories.

“It’s up to friends, family and clubs to do that, so we hope to see plenty of emails and nomination forms coming in over the next few weeks.”

The Sports Council panel are looking for performers who have had great sporting success during 2019 at national or international championships or who have had the honour of representing Scotland or Great Britain in prestigious international events or championships.

Information is also required on local teams who have had a top year of achievement during 2019 at international, UK or Scottish championship level.

The awards are only open to amateur sportsmen and women who live in East Kilbride and the surrounding areas.

The News and the Sports Council have no bearing on who is entered into each category so nominations are needed in the following categories:

■ Adult sports personality of the year;

■ Junior male sports personality of the year (under 18 as of January 1, 2019);

■ Junior female sports personality of the year (under 18 as of January 1, 2019);

■ Junior male individual of the year (under 12 as of January 1, 2019);

■ Junior female individual of the year (under 12 as of January 1, 2019)

■ Veteran of the year (50 and over).

In the team categories there are awards for club of the year, senior team of the year, junior team of the year (under 18, as of January 1, 2019), coach of the year, administrator of the year and there is also a services to sport award.
