Time running out for Steelers WR Donte Moncrief

The clock is ticking for the Pittsburgh Steelers and wide receiver Donte Moncrief. The Steelers signed Moncrief in the offseason to bolster the wide receiver depth chart and give Pittsburgh a true veteran presence on offense.

Unfortunately, none of these things have happened and Moncrief as a player has been a flop. Moncrief has only appeared in four games and only has four receptions. He has nearly as many drops as he does catches so far.

But why is time running out for Moncrief this season? Because a 2020 third-round pick hangs in the balance. There is a formula the NFL uses for awarding compensatory draft picks based on players lost and players signed. The Steelers had a third-round pick all locked up but once the Philadelphia Eagles released linebacker L.J. Fort the formula was thrown off and as of now there’s a real question whether or not Pittsburgh will still be awarded the pick.

However if the Steelers release Moncrief before Week 10, it will re-adjust the formula and Pittsburgh will have their third-round pick back. This is especially important because the Steelers don’t currently have a first or third-round pick. So being able to recoup one of those would be ideal.
