Time lapse footage from space shows Typhoon Soudelor

(ISS)

Timelapse footage from August 4, shot from the International Space Station (ISS), shows Typhoon Soudelor's distinguishable eye as it approaches Taiwan.

Super Typhoon Soudelor tore across the western Pacific Ocean yesterday with wind gusts of up to 220mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The typhoon was rated at a maximum category five.

On Sunday night and Monday morning, Soudelor devastated Saipan as it passed across the Northern Mariana Islands.

Residents of Saipan are currently without water and electricity, with the typhoon knocking out electricity on the 48-square-mile island.

More than 500 people on Saipan were in shelters, the Red Cross said.

With sustained winds of up to 218 mph, Super Typhoon Soudelor is category 5 on the hurricane scale, making it the strongest tropical cyclone in 2015 so far.
