'Time has stood still' for family of murdered mum

Detectives have issued a fresh appeal as they continue to investigate the unsolved murder of a mum-of-two.

Veronica Anderson, known as Vera, left her home in Widnes at 10.10pm on Saturday, August 24, 1991, after she received a phone call. She was found strangled with her throat slashed in her car on Tannery Lane in Penketh shortly after 3am in the early hours of August 25.

A bloodied “Minette” brand cotton glove was found at the scene, with forensic testing matching the blood to that of the murdered 42-year-old. The ECHO reported at the time that a Home Office pathologist estimated the time of death to have been between 11.30pm and 2.30am.

Vera’s murder gained renewed attention last year as the 30-year anniversary passed, including fresh press appeals, Crimewatch coverage and a true crime podcast.

In March this year, Cheshire Police said detectives had arrested a 70-year-old man from Widnes and a 61-year-old woman from Warrington on suspicion of murder in connection with the case.

They have both since been released under investigation.

Officers remain eager for anyone with any information that might help to solve the case to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Adam Waller said: “A lot has changed in the last 31 years however for Vera’s family, time has stood still. No matter how many years pass, Vera’s death remains to have an impact on their lives.

“We will continue to work on any snippet of information that is provided to us and are committed to doing everything possible to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Cheshire Constabulary via cheshire.police.uk or call 101 quoting occurrence number 0709373610.

Anyone who doesn’t want to speak to the police can provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org
