'Time for Harry Kane to leave' - How the national media reacted to Tottenham's draw at Everton

The Guardian

"Harry Kane had just struck his 21st Premier League goal of the season and second of a highly entertaining affair at Goodison Park but his grim reaction confirmed personal milestones mean nothing compared to collective achievement for the Tottenham striker," Andy Hunter wrote in The Guardian.

"A point brought little comfort for Kane, Spurs or Everton as their respective European aspirations continue to falter. Kane became the first player to reach 20 league goals for the campaign and the fourth to reach the landmark in five Premier League seasons overall. Only Alan Shearer and Sergio Aguero have hit the 20-goal mark in more Premier League campaigns, seven and six times respectively, but Kane was evidently not in the mood for celebration even before he made it 21 or limped off after Richarlison landed on his foot in stoppage time.

"With the Carabao Cup final on Sunday week an injury scare to his leading marksman is the last thing Jose Mourinho requires as he attempts to validate his Spurs appointment with silverware.

"It could, and should, have been worse at Goodison where Carlo Ancelotti’s side missed several excellent chances to record their third win over Spurs this season and gifted Kane his two goals with appalling defending."

Daily Mirror

"If this was a contest that confirmed Harry Kane’s right to be regarded as a true great, then it also perhaps proved beyond doubt it is time to leave Spurs," David Maddock wrote for the Daily Mirror.

"Only his sublime, instinctive quality in front of goal delivered a point against an Everton side who seemed stronger in all departments bar centre forward.

But it was not enough for the visitors, whose chance of a top four finish has now surely gone with these two dropped points...and maybe with it, the Tottenham tenure of their best striker in six decades.

"He limped off right at the end with an injury that, should it prove as serious as it looked, could even mean this was his swansong. If it is, then at least he will go in style.

"Kane’s two brilliant goals took him beyond Robbie Fowler into seventh in the all time Premier League scoring charts...and also delivered a depressing statistic to go alongside all his records.

"He is now the striker to have scored the MOST goals in the Premier League without winning it, taking away Fowler’s unwanted stat in that regard.

"With the two Manchester clubs hot on his trail, the lack of trophies at Spurs is something he will have to now address, especially without Champions League football next season. An all time great deserves better."

The Daily Mail

"Harry Kane sprang up off the floor, as if he had sat on a pin," Dominic King wrote in the Daily Mail. "He began to hop and, immediately, gave the universal signal to Tottenham’s bench that he needed to be replaced.

"This entertaining contest had just reached the 90th minute. To that point the narrative had been around how another Kane brace had illustrated his importance to this team; those two goals, either side of half-time, had enabled him to move alongside some exalted names.

"Kane’s tally for the campaign was 21. It was the fifth season he had broken through the 20-barrier, an achievement on a par with Thierry Henry. Only Alan Shearer (seven) and Sergio Aguero (six) have managed to do it more. Typically, they had been dispatched with power and panache.

"But, as he danced on the spot and clenched his teeth, the facts and figures had suddenly become meaningless. Jose Mourinho – thinking about the Carabao Cup final next Sunday – stood on the touchline with his hands in his pockets, his brow furrowing.

"‘Change me,’ Kane was seen to say on the pitch. ‘It’s gone.’"
