Time for democracy

I agree with your Sept 27 editorial in calling on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to come out with an election date or a clear timetable to bring the country back to democracy soon.

Prior to the 2014 coup, Thailand had been plunged into a deep cesspool of corruption as a result of its age-old patronage system. Moral standards in the country had never been so low.

Thus far, under the current military regime, several past corrupt practices have been discovered in the country's political, bureaucratic and even religious circles. Many culprits have been caught, tried and punished.

Hence, it's time Thailand and the Thai people go back to democratic rule again.

Britain rejoins world

Re: "The dire mess Britain finds itself in", (Opinion, Sept 26).

The referendum to which Mr John Lloyd refers to was a long-awaited plebiscite. The outcome was a huge majority in parliamentary terms being far greater than any general election in living memory and a greater voter turnout than most.

His suggestion that Leave voters were uninformed is little more than an insult; the months of campaigning were there to ensure people were informed. The government even spent millions of taxpayers' money on a leaflet to every home in the country, which was fully in support of Remain. Simply the "scare campaign" by the Remain side just didn't hold any credence with voters.

Before that we suffered the humiliation of PM Cameron going cap in hand to Brussels asking for "reform" and a "special deal for Britain" and came back with "a handbrake", or considerably less than Neville Chamberlain did from Munich in 1938.

PM May is not in a fatally precarious position, you only need to check many of the governments within Europe that are in power by coalition to understand that. Further, George Osborne who predicted financial ruin and mass unemployment in Britain was sacked and Bank of England governor Mark Carney will be replaced next year.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been a Eurosceptic for 35 years, and that illuminates the fact that the "EU question" is as divisive in the Labour Party as it is in the Conservative Party.

The reasons the negotiations are stalling is simple: The EU has no idea how they replace the billions we pay in: The French are wondering who will pay for their farmers; and the Germans are still hoping to sell us cars and are getting pretty sick of coughing up for the other 26 members that contribute nothing or much, much less.

He sums up by saying "their decision [on Brexit] was probably not a wise act" and goes on to suggest that by leaving the EU, Britain is not looking for greater globalisation. Well, Mr Lloyd, you are wrong, it is an essential part of Brexit.

The whole world does not revolve around the bureaucratic state of the EU, and the UK is about to join the world once again.

Keystone cops

A fried pork seller was detained for 200 days without bail for a crime he did not commit (BP, Sept 27). Permanent secretary for justice Dusadee Arayawuth said the police investigation was "flawed and incomplete and the real culprit could not be brought to justice".

I had to read this sentence a dozen times before realising it was not a misprint. A senior police officer finally admits that an investigation was flawed. This officer should have been in charge of the Koh Tao murder case. Perhaps he might have come to the same conclusion.

Educate on autism

Re: "Love and Anger", Life, Sept 26.

Doctor Panom Ketumarn doesn't mention autism which I believe is a large problem in Thailand and the world. Public and international schools in Thailand have no idea about autism and and label children with the ADHD label. The point I'm making is teachers should be given some general knowledge to spot autism.
