Time Capsule and Airdrie leisure centre to reopen

The Time Capsule and Airdrie leisure centre will reopen this weekend when Monklands moves back down to tier-three coronavirus restrictions.

Leisure facilities have had to close their doors during North Lanarkshire’s three weeks in level four – but now the Coatbridge centre’s swimming pools and gym will welcome back customers from 6pm on Friday when the change comes into effect.

Airdrie leisure centre will then reopen on Saturday morning, and the Time Capsule’s junior swimming lessons resume on the same day.

However, group fitness classes at all venues remain suspended in line with government guidance; and there remains no date set for the reopening of John Smith pool in Airdrie or other indoor venues in the council area including the Iain Nicolson centre in Chryston.

Culture and Leisure North Lanarkshire (CLNL) said in a statement: “At this stage, we do not have any further information on the next phase of venue openings.

“As soon as we have more information, we will update our website and social media channels with all the latest news.”

The Time Capsule and Airdrie leisure centre are among six North Lanarkshire venues which first reopened in September, but then had to close again last month under level-four regulations which also saw the closure of all of Monklands’ hospitality venues and non-essential retail.

Bookings are now open for individual gym sessions, and for outdoor golf and tennis; while direct debits are being automatically adjusted to reflect the impact of the closure period.

CLNL added: “Fitness classes remain off; we understand this is disappointing to many people but must follow all government guidance, and as a continued goodwill gesture, we will be continuing to offer our online membership, to online fitness classes and more, free of charge.”
