Newcastle is set to crown a new queen or king - drag queen or king that is.
Timberlina's Drag Off kicks off this Sunday with the first of three heats before a winner is crowned at the grand final on August 29.
The event was first held during Newcastle Pride last year, but the cancellation of that event this year led to the drag off becoming a stand alone event.
"I thought let's just do it, I didn't want there to be a gap between winners," event organiser Timberlina said.
To comply with COVID-19 restrictions, the event will have a limited live audience but will be live streamed for free via Twitch.tv.
A fierce lineup of 14 contestants will vie for the crown, which will be decided by a panel of 14 judges. The winner will take home more than $3000 in prizes, including $500 cash.
Timberlina said as well as providing a platform for the performers, events like this were also really important for the LGBTIQ community.
"When Newcastle lost the Gateway, the queer community felt like it lost events," she said. "The community still needs it and wants it."
