Tim Tebow is still trying to make a baseball career happen and is still playing for the New York Mets organization. And the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner actually had a pretty big highlight earlier this week when he hit a two-run homer off the Detroit Tigers for his first extra-base hit at major league camp.
But later this week, Tebow’s defense — which famously hasn’t been great in his four years with the Mets organization — really took an embarrassing turn for the worse, resulting in a play he surely wants back.
In the Mets’ 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday in Port St. Lucie, Florida, a ninth-inning pop-up from Max Schrock to Tebow in left field looked like it would end the game.
And then this happened to the former NFL quarterback…
Although Tebow’s right shoelaces were untied on this play, it’s unclear if he tripped over the laces or simply his own feet. But this isn’t great. (He also went 0-for-2 Friday.)
Schrock doubled, but the Mets ended the game when the next batter, Edmundo Sosa, flied out to right.
Tebow signed a minor-league contract with the Mets in September of 2016, but despite playing in spring training games, he has yet to make it to the majors. Plays like his gaffe Friday probably aren’t helping his case, and neither are these:
