Tim Sherwood sends pointed message to Mauricio Pochettino after Tottenham's win over Arsenal

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tim Sherwood believes his former side could finally be turning a corner under Jose Mourinho this year.

Spurs currently sit top of the Premier League table after the first 11 games with 24 points to their name.

Their most recent win - a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon - was their seventh of the campaign and they have lost just once all season.

Sherwood, who played for Tottenham between 1999 and 2003 and managed the side in 2013/14, believes Mourinho's winning mentality is helping players and fans believe the side can challenge for trophies again.

The 51-year-old said on TalkSport even though the Portuguese boss' playing style has come in for some criticism, the end results are what count - as their trophyless spell under Mauricio Pochettino proved.

"You only care about 30 per cent possession if you end the season without silverware," said Sherwood.

"For five years they've played on the front foot under a manager (Pochettino) who trusted them to go toe-to-toe with any team in the land and what have they got for it? Pats on the back are all they got.

"When they look at the trophy cabinet, what's in there? Nothing since 2008.

"They need to start winning trophies. Jose has won 20 major trophies in his time.

"He's got a gameplan now and a clear identity of how he wants them to play."

Mourinho was appointed by Spurs just over a year ago after Pochettino oversaw a disappointing start to the season and got sacked.

The side went on to finish in sixth place in the Premier League last season and although he still has critics, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is slowly working his magic on the players, according to Sherwood.

"When Jose first went in there he was caught between two stools - he was trying to entertain like Pochettino and he wants to be pragmatic as well," explained the pundit.

"I would say to Jose - just be yourself. You've been brought into the football club because you're a winner.

"They need to start winning, and if they win a trophy the fans won't care and nor will the players [about the playing style]. They will do anything at the moment.

"Jose has got them believing and why wouldn't you believe a man who is a serial winner?

"If he says [to a player] I want you to go over there and stand on your head for five minutes they'd go and do it."
