Tim Sherwood makes bold Harry Kane claim as Tottenham crash out of the Carabao Cup

Tim Sherwood has insisted that Harry Kane will have been desperate to play against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup to ensure Tottenham have the best chance of winning a trophy.

The England captain was rested and left out of the matchday 18 by Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs crashed out the league cup against League Two opposition.

Despite facing the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, Tottenham couldn't find a breakthrough and were beaten 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

It was a massive upset that Spurs could have done without, having lost to Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Although Pochettino made mass change to his team, internationals such as Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Lucas Moura and Davidson Sanchez were all named in the starting XI.

Christian Eriksen, Heung-Min Son and Eric Lamela were all called on from the bench too, but they couldn't find a way past Colchester, who knocked out Crystal Palace in round two.

Sherwood believes that this was a massive opportunity missed for Tottenham and has questioned why Kane was left out of the team.

Although the former Spurs boss admitted the team Pochettino named was more than good enough to win the league, he believes Kane would have been desperate to play in order to give the club the best chance of winning some silverware.

Speaking on Sky Sports The Debate, he said: "I know the fans want to win a trophy but the manager, Mauricio (Pochettino) wants to win a trophy as well.

"Yesterday, he’ll have said to Harry Kane, ‘I’m not taking you, I’m not putting you on the bench’ and Harry will have said ‘why not? I want to win a trophy.

"If you want to win something and I’m one of your best players, take me, I want to play.’

“It’s all about winning trophies now.”
