Tim Sherwood hits out at Ralf Rangnick and Manchester United following Newcastle draw

Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Tim Sherwood described Manchester United's performance as "diabolical" following their 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday evening.

Despite arriving in the North East as overwhelming favourites, United produced, arguably, their most sluggish and disjointed display of the season so far, with Newcastle dominating proceedings from the very first whistle.

United earned themselves a point thanks to a second half strike from substitute Edinson Cavani, with the Uruguayan's close-range finish cancelling out Allan Saint-Maximin's terrific early opener.

Ralf Rangnick's side, despite entering the contest on a run of three successive Premier League wins, were sloppy, lacked energy and created barely anything in their attempts to bridge the gap on the top-four.

Having produced such a pitiful display against a side that has won only once in the league this season, former Spurs chief Sherwood hit out at United's performance, claiming that had they played so badly under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer there would have been calls for him to be sacked.

"It's so bad from Man Utd, their fans must be so frustrated," Sherwood told the Premier League's official website. "They've got good players here but they're not being shone in the correct light, they look a shadow of themselves.

"If this was a Solskjaer side, we'd be saying he's not experienced enough, he's not been coached long enough, how can he get the job?

"Rangnick’s been in coaching for 42 years, that’s diabolical."

Earlier this month, Sherwood questioned United's decision to appoint Rangnick as Solskjaer's short-term successor, insisting he was "lucky" to have landed the job.

Speaking just over two weeks ago, Sherwood told Sky Sports : "I think Man United fans need to relax a little bit. If they play in the way that he wants them to play against the top teams, then you can give him credit.

"I think he has earned the right to be where he is, but I think he is lucky to be Man United manager, I really do. Nobody else wanted him. There wasn't a bun fight for this guy. The guy was available and they think he is the best man for it.

"He looks very good talking to the press - he spins it brilliantly.

"I am not a fan and I think it is right to be cautious about it. I have seen managers talk very, very well. The talking has to be done on the pitch and we have to see improvement in Man United."
