Tim Fosu-Mensah admits to positive role in Donny van de Beek's Man Utd transfer

Manchester United's Tim Fosu-Mensah has revealed that he talked up the Red Devils to Donny van de Beek before the Dutchman completed his move.

United signed the former Ajax man for £40m in the summer.

Van de Beek was on the radar of several top European clubs, namely Real Madrid, but it was the Premier League side who secured his services.

Fosu-Mensah, who knew van de Beek from their time together in the Ajax academy, attempted to deliver his own sales pitch.

The defender hailed United as the "biggest club" in the world and urged him to grasp the opportunity if it came to fruition.

“I told him United is a big club, if not the biggest club," he revealed on United's official website

“I said it's good if you have the opportunity to come here. We have got very good team-mates, the quality is very good here.

“I said, 'It’s up to you because I can’t make the decision for you but it’s a very good club'. At the end of the day it was his decision.”

Van de Beek has struggled for minutes so far this season however despite scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred to use the 23-year-old as an option from the bench.

Although his good performances have forced the United boss to play him from the start in recent weeks.

And Fosu-Mensah is confident that van de Beek will prove a shrewd addition to the squad.

He added: “He’s a good player, a player with a lot of qualities and I think he’s also a good guy so he’ll bring a lot of positive things to the club.”

The defender was also pleased at having the chance to reunited with a player whom he had grown up alongside.

“It’s special also because we’ve seen each other since we were so small," he continued.

"Growing up and then I left when I was 16. He was still at Ajax but we always had good contact with each other."
